Supported formats

Nuotit handles the full range of audio formats encountered in real-world personal libraries — from high-fidelity archival recordings to audiobooks purchased from independent publishers.

MP3
Universal compatibility, ID3 tag support including chapter markers
M4A / M4B
AAC audio in MPEG-4 container; M4B includes audiobook chapter support
AAC / AIFF
High-efficiency audio and uncompressed formats
WAV
Uncompressed lossless audio — full quality, larger files
FLAC
Compressed lossless audio — archival quality at smaller sizes than WAV

Nuotit does not re-encode imported files. FLAC and WAV files play at their original quality through iOS's native audio stack. ID3 tags — title, artist, album, artwork, and chapter markers where present — are read automatically on import.

Three ways to import

  • Files app: Find the file in Files → tap Share → Open in Nuotit
  • AirDrop: Send from Mac or another iPhone → "Open in Nuotit" appears on the share sheet
  • In-app importer: Library → Add → Browse Files — the add view highlights recently imported files for quick access

First-class citizens — what that actually means

Many podcast apps treat local files as an afterthought — a secondary folder with limited functionality, separate from the main library. In Pocket Casts, local file import requires uploading your files to Pocket Casts' cloud servers. In Castro, local files live in an iCloud folder with limited integration. In Overcast, local file support relies on uploading to a web interface first.

In Nuotit, an imported audiobook chapter and a downloaded RSS episode have identical capabilities. Both appear in smart playlist filters. Both can have generated transcripts. Both support chapter navigation. Both have the same audio processing pipeline — EQ, compressor, voice isolation. Both are searchable by transcript keyword. The only difference is where they came from.

  • Imported files appear in the same smart playlists as RSS episodes
  • On-device transcript generation for any imported file
  • Chapter navigation from ID3 tags and M4B containers
  • Full EQ, dynamics, and voice isolation pipeline
  • Rename files directly — swipe left or use context menu
  • Playback progress tracked identically to podcast episodes
  • Folder and metadata structure respected on import

What people actually import

Patreon and subscriber-only content

Download the MP3 from your Patreon feed or email and import it directly. Alternatively, many Patreon podcasts provide a private RSS feed URL that you can add to Nuotit directly — no download step needed.

DRM-free audiobooks

Books purchased from Libro.fm, Downpour, the author's own Gumroad, or similar DRM-free sources arrive as M4B or MP3 files. Import them once — they live alongside your podcasts permanently, with chapters intact.

University lectures and conference recordings

Many academic institutions distribute course recordings as MP3 or M4A files. Import them and generate transcripts for precise search — find a specific argument in a 90-minute lecture by keyword.

Voice memos and personal recordings

Export from the Voice Memos app and import into Nuotit. Generate a transcript. Use tap-to-seek to navigate meeting notes, brainstorms, or interviews by spoken content rather than timestamp.

Language learning audio

Course materials, dialogue recordings, and supplementary audio from language learning programs. Slow playback to 0.6x for detailed listening, then generate a transcript to read along.

High-fidelity music and spoken word

FLAC and WAV recordings of live performances, historical broadcasts, or archival material. Played at full quality with EQ and loudness analysis available.
